Shirley Goodsell

1st October – 12th November 2016

Fruitmarket Family History Project

Shirley is researching her family history that has strong connections to the Fruitmarket area. This research will be captured in her new paintings.

This large exhibition of paintings by Shirley Goodsell reflects a change in subject matter to a more personal style and journey.

A Family’s Journey through Hull’s Old Town chronicles and celebrates Hull’s Old Town before it changes to become a Modern, twenty-first century ‘Live/ Work Village’ for the City of Culture 2017.

Generations of Goodsell’s family lived in the Old Town. The thirty plus oil paintings in this exhibition begin with the early 19th Century and finish in the 1970’s when her last relative living in the area died. Goodsell says about the works:

“My paintings convey the smell of Carvers the fish stall, the smell of fish when the wind changed from the fish dock, boys after school with worms on hooks, string and sticks to fish for eels and teeming crowds hunting for weekend meat bargains.”
Starts: 1st October Ends: 12th November
